Unique Features of the VX4

  1. Hybrid lift‑cruise with wing and vectored thrust
    • Eight carbon‑composite propellers (four tilt‑rotor front, four lift‑only rear) enable vertical takeoff & transition to efficient wing‑borne cruise at ~240 km/h
  2. High power-to-weight prototype
    • Latest full-scale VX4 prototype features a 20% better power-to-weight ratio than its predecessor, enabling its top cruise speed of ~240 km/h
  3. Proprietary battery + next-gen propulsion
    • First aircraft to use Vertical’s in-house developed aerospace-grade battery pack and new propeller tech—rapid-charging, high output, with multiple backups
  4. Advanced fly‑by‑wire & Honeywell inceptor integration
    • Equipped with compact, lightweight controls and robust digital flight system from Honeywell for smooth, safe handling
  5. Certified-level safety and redundancy
    • Designed to meet EASA/CAA standards with multi-layer redundancy in propulsion, avionics, and batteries
  6. Passenger-focused cabin design
    • Spacious interior with large windows, skylight, dedicated storage per seat, USB ports, and easy entry via side doors
  7. Quiet urban operation
    • Whisper-quiet cruise noise—even quieter than a refrigerator—ideal for densely populated city routes
  8. First public airport‑to‑airport flight completion
    • Demonstrated real-world operations by flying from Cotswold Airport to RAF Fairford at 185 km/h over public airspace
  9. Hybrid-electric future variant
    • VX4 airframe designed for easy retrofit to hybrid-electric, unlocking ~1,600 km range and ~1,100 kg payload—set for mid-2026 testing
  10. Strong commercial and defence backing
    • ~1,500 pre-orders from airlines (American, Virgin, Japan wide), plus development for defence/logistics/special missions

  1. Wingspan 15m from:
    https://evtol.news/vertical-aerospace-VA-1X
So prop-rotors likely 3.3m scaling from front image.
My own calculations suggest 710kW to 770kW hover power.
    With 1000kg of 243Wh/kg cells, Molicel P45B, that gives 2.9C to 3.16C.
Initial calculation ignores resistance, but Molicel P50B has more energy density.
So 19 to 20min of hover time, which will be <15min with adequate reserves.
Cruise at 52m/s estimated at 200kW, so 0.82C, or 1.22hrs.
Allow 5 mins VTOL, gives 0.91hrs level flight. So 170km (106miles) range with no reserves.
    All figures are estimates only.

  2. It would be useful to have edit access to posted comments that have been accepted. I often revise numbers once I’ve refined/debugged the method. Edit access also allows revisit of assumptions in response to later comments or data by other users – better discussion…
